  • Allow students to experience each design step within a limited time, and guide students to discover problems, try to solve problems, and consider comprehensive factors such as sustainability at the same time, so that students can learn how to effectively transform ideas into 1: 1 product.

Today, with the rapid development of science and technology, the concept of minimalist design is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. For product design, ecology, economy, sustainability and large-scale mass production are still important design factors. We have to work together to find solutions, refine and realize them in drawings and in different scale models. Strengthen your abilities through rounds of sketches and working models, and finally demonstrate the design 1: 1 model to complete the all-round exercise of design capabilities.

    Yang Yili Zhang Jingyi

The main body of the work itself only uses one sheet with a thickness of about 3-4 mm It is made of corrugated cardboard, using the common folding and inserting principle in paper furniture design. You can use the cut materials to quickly build a stool that is convenient for immediate use. In order to better fit the theme of sustainable design, the buckle structure used inside is also made of the remaining materials after the main body is cut, so as to achieve a higher utilization rate of materials as much as possible. The title of the work therefore identifies both the product being designed and the amount of materials used in it. The finished stools are available in different specifications for adults and children. The overall shape is square and simple, and can be used in home environments as well as in office areas.

    Modular triangular prism series furniture

    Chen Feng and Deng Bowen

Our group's work this time revolves around the theme of triangular prisms, including packaging, tables, chairs, boxes and other containers. Due to the load-bearing and supporting characteristics of the triangular prism itself, we implemented the concept of modularity, transforming it from a single module into a table, chair or hexagonal prism container suitable for storage. Among them, the content of the chair is our most important experimental work this time. Its load-bearing capacity and structural ingenuity demonstrate the thinking of the modular triangular prism to the greatest extent.

This is an application-oriented practical teaching course on design methods. It uses corrugated paper, a sustainable material, as the design raw material to explore the application of product structure design methods. The early preparation stage mainly focused on corrugated paper structure learning and intent map search. After accumulating relevant knowledge, the design direction was determined and structural relationships began to be explored. By improving and deepening the model every week, a more mature design output was finally iterated. This kind of experimental method that intuitively perceives product characteristics through the construction of small-scale models has certain universality. This method of building a model, constantly looking for deficiencies in the model, and optimizing the design is the greatest inspiration this course has given us. It took six weeks to continuously polish a paper lamp with a solid structure and beautiful appearance, which was indispensable for the careful guidance and tolerance of the instructor team. During this period, Professor Lidsburg’s rigorous and kind teaching methods made us deeply realize the excellent qualities of being a structural engineer and worthy of our continuous learning.

After taking this course, I learned a lot about various design principles and principles of corrugated paper. Understand the design process and principles of designing sustainable furniture. Thank you so much Peter Litzlbauer Professor, Teacher Zou Pan, Teacher Wang Jingjing, and Teacher Hu Fang gave us careful guidance in the design process. Our initial theme was the load-bearing capacity of the organ fold. During the research process, we discovered the elasticity in its structure. This attribute is interesting. We plan to go deeper and also work with Professor After many exchanges, we decided to use its elasticity to make a seat. We also encountered many difficulties in the process, such as the large number of cuts and the difficulties in final assembly. Under the guidance of our teacher and our research, we finally successfully completed this work before the deadline. What impressed me deeply was that every time the professor gave us a plan, he would take a piece of paper to record our plan in the form of a sketch and think about its derivation. The professor's meticulous attitude is worth learning from. I think that to make a good design, you need to have this kind of meticulous attitude, and only by doing every little thing well can you design well. We still have a lot to learn, and we look forward to working together!

This sustainable design course gave me a deep understanding of the practical application of sustainable concepts in daily life. In the process of making chairs, we learned how to choose appropriate cardboard and mastered basic manual skills such as cutting and splicing. This makes us realize that sustainability is not just a concept, but needs to be put into action in practice. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical operations, we have a deeper understanding of the application of sustainable materials. Additionally, this course deepened our understanding of teamwork. In the process of making chairs, we need to collaborate with each other to solve problems and reach consensus. This not only improved our communication skills, but also exercised teamwork skills. Under the guidance of the teacher, we step by step from understanding materials to designing products, and then from 1:10 small models to 1:1 finished products. This course provided us with a comprehensive learning experience, which not only broadened our knowledge, but also cultivated our practical ability and teamwork spirit. This gives us a deeper understanding of sustainability and inspires us to become more actively involved in sustainable development practices.

This sustainable design course was a profound and exciting learning journey. The teachers not only conveyed rich theoretical knowledge in the classroom, but also led us to deeply understand and apply the principles of sustainable design through practical cases and project practice. The course also promotes innovation and functionality in design. We learned how to design furniture that is both beautiful, functional and environmentally friendly. They sparked our interest in sustainability challenges and fostered innovative problem-solving thinking by getting us involved in actually making furniture. In this course, teachers focus on stimulating students' initiative and creativity. They advocate the application of knowledge so that we can apply the knowledge we have learned in practice. This is also the first time that we have transformed our design from 1: The small model of 10 is gradually pushed to the final 1: 1 large model, as the size of the product increased, we also encountered a lot of problems, but with the patient guidance and help of the teachers, our plan was improved and optimized step by step, and finally achieved relatively satisfactory results. Most importantly, this course calls our attention to sustainable lifestyles. Through furniture design, we deeply understand that everyone can contribute to the environment and society through their own actions. This is not only a technical design course, but also a comprehensive experience and thinking about the concept of sustainable development.

group member: Jin Xinhao Tianchi Wu Enjie

This is a course with a high degree of completion and frequent production of various scale models. The students have a deep understanding of the design itself, materials, structure, etc. Throughout the process, students must maintain a clear head and a positive and optimistic attitude. Along with the design project, design methods are well taught through individual conversations within the group, combined with explanations of sketches.

Students will encounter various problems during the design stage, and their abilities in independently mastering solutions, understanding design background issues, analyzing existing data, and asking necessary questions have been greatly improved. For example, students usually prepare multiple choices for themselves to judge whether the first solution is really the best solution for the design intent. For another example, in the design work that has already begun, students use their own imagination to find further and expandable design possibilities. While computer graphics and representation were widely accepted, they began to think more deeply about the interrelationship between images. In addition, students began to have the awareness to design environmentally friendly products. In general, the students demonstrated good independent innovation capabilities and the ability to improve their own creativity in this course.

    Let's keep working together!
